John Carver made his intentions crystal clear in his first major Press conference since being appointed head coach.
Carver was upbeat and spoke like a man who is ready to go in fighting. There was even a mention for his critics, namely some of the pundits who have claimed he isn’t the right man for the job. Carver delivered 12 minutes and 23 seconds’ worth of quotes for the TV cameras and then 18 minutes and 54 seconds for the newspaper men.
Nickamed “The Miserable One” by his backroom team, Carver was in chirpy mood as he joked with journalists about the 6 - 1 win over the Press pack in a recent game behind the scenes at Benton. But then it was back to business.
He won’t be answering too many questions about transfers because he won’t be too heavily involved in the process of recruitment. Carver has now started to use the parking space at the club’s training ground and has re-located into Alan Pardew’s old manager’s office. But unlike the men who came before him he will have NO input into transfers. That will be left to the less high-profile figures of Lee Charnley and Graham Carr.
His lack of input on recruitment makes the Newcastle job look intriguing from the outside looking in. The dynamics of the club are set up so that Press conferences will be strictly football affairs. No club politics, no standing up or knocking down names of players linked with a move to the club and not too much insight on contract situations. Carver will be tasked with the same assignment that Pardew didn’t always stick to.
Very often the former boss would drift off topic and say something that little bit too spicy that would result in negative headlines. Like the time when Pardew said: “It’ll be uncomfortable for us both, because we’ve both underachieved. Him as an owner and me as a manager.”
Carver is unlikely to make that mistake. Newcastle know they have a head coach that is desperate to do well in the position and keep a tight grip of the job.
There will be very few stepping on toes and the transfers will be left to Charnley and Carr.
When asked if there would be business in the window, Carver said: “I wouldn’t have thought so. I don’t get involved in it.
“I’ve not had any conversations about it. I’ve had many, many other conversations with Lee but I am quite happy to work under these conditions.
“I’ve done it before as a head coach at Toronto. I worked under these conditions.
“My job is to work with the guys on the pitch. I am quite happy with whoever goes in or out and to deal with what is put in front of me.”
That’s how the job is likely to pan out.
Whether Press calls with Carver continue now depend entirely on results. With 16 games left and 48 points to play for it is a written invitation to win the job.
From reading that lot and without actually seeing anything on TV I can only surmise that the New Head Coach; is prepared to take all the flack for any team failure, fully accepts the prospect of losing key men in his team during what remains of this transfer window or the summer regardless of any positive results he may achieve and that their replacements are likely to either not be as good or nothing more than a massive gamble. The season may not be over however in my view this looks like a recipe for complete disaster. Time will tell and I sincerely hope my doom and gloom prediction doesn't come anywhere near to happening. Mind you by then I may be well past caring...
Judging by all this crap how did Pardew put up with all this? It amazes me how anyone can work under these circumstances, it ridiculous!! I cannot see anyone of any worth coming here, ever! As long as the fat man is here with his cohorts we may as well shut up shop.
Lights Oot!
