Read an interesting piece by Simon Bird (one of those JFK's expletive ridden rant was aimed at many moons ago) in The Mirror regarding the PSG interest in Yohan Cabaye. I guess the main question raised in this article which any Toon fan wants to know the answer too is just what price will force a sale and will it be this week? Anyone that has even remotely followed The Mags under the tenure of our most benevolent owner already knows each member of the squad has a sale price, but the timing of such deals is crucial in terms of making a potential profit. The Andy Carroll transfer of three years ago kind of set the bar for such things, but now looks very much a one off. My view is that it depends on how desperate a situation the buying club finds itself in. That was very true of The Red Scousers and to a lesser extent could be said of Manure's purchase of Mata this weekend gone, although in fairness the Spaniard does have a much better track record on which to base a fee of £35m. PSG just don't appear to fall into the desperate category. So should an offer in the region of £20m+ come in this week for Cabaye do you sell or hope for something similar happening in the summer? Personally with little to play for other than a safe League position, as Newcastle's hierarchy have already mapped out this is what they consider success, I reckon he will go this week should an offer of £20m+ be put on the table, although how much the player himself will have a say in it all is open to debate. I'm just resigned to this kind of thing now, despite the fact Mikey and Co. have not cashed in on other assets since AC left, simply because making money comes before everything at NUFC and as other forms of income are struggling to match the owners expectations this is one way of making a killing. One thing for sure I don't see much of any profit made being put back into the playing side. APee has already as much as admitted he is powerless to prevent Cabaye from leaving so not much point in saying anything else on the topic. Quite what Joe Feckinghere is doing to find a replacement for Cabaye should he go by Friday, well your guess is as good as mine. Then we come back to the timing of this deal should it go through. If it wasn't bad enough having to deal with all the speculation a couple of days before an away trip to Norwich it just becomes another kick in the teeth when you consider the impact it will have before Saturdays derby against The Mackems! What do you think? WL

Hate to say it, especially in the run-up to the Derby, but if they're going to sell Cabaye, they'd may as well sell him now (disclaimer: I do not want them to sell him), provided, of course, that he's worth more today than he will be in the Summer. If OMBO can extract an extra couple million pounds for a mid-season transfer, then it surely should be done...we're not really fighting for anything this year...I don't know if they could be any more mid-table than they already are...
...the flip side of that argument is can he enhance his value more between now and the start of next season...on the one hand, teams will know he's desperate to get out...but there could also be more competition for him in the summer window, especially if he continues his current form and tops it off with a strong showing at the World Cup...he could equally have this form tail off and suffer a horrific injury (hoping not), thereby drastically diminishing his value...it depends how OMBO views the risk-reward...
Let's say Cabaye is rated at £18m...if you sell him now, you could get between £18m-£23m, maybe. If you want until after the season - depending on how the next 6 months play out - that number could be anywhere from £12m-£28m, I would think...
If PSG comes in at £25m, he's gone...and I'd be hard-pressed to criticize the business aspect of that decision...

Mac, as the majority of the key decisions taken at are now done with a firm business head on I suggest the deal will be concluded this week to maximize the fee rather than hold out in hope for better things come the summer. Cabaye is an attractive purchase now in that he is also free to play Champions League Football once it resumes. His cost will hold an additional premium because of that fact with PSG, Manure and to a lesser degree The Gooners all knowing it. During the summer that aspect doesn't come under as much consideration, although should he stay then make the French squad for Brazil it may add a bit more to his value, but not by much. The stumbling block to that scenario is that he will also be able to buy himself out of his contract which will be entering its final two years and possibly leave at a much lower cost than now. On that basis alone I just don't see our most benevolent owner delaying the inevitable should an acceptable (In Mikey's eyes) offer be made. As always with The Toon whether we sign anyone or not in the run up to the window closing it will drive many fans close to crazy. Mind you it pays to be a bit mental to follow the buggers anyway. WL

Here's another thought to ponder over... Did Remy know Cabaye was going and that is why he has refused to commit to The Toon?

Leazes the way it works is that Cabaye had to say that and even if he didn't it probably would have been put out that he did say it.
Regretably unless NUFC are ever taken over by a major money source our better players will always end up somewhere else.

It will sound weird to say "it didn't hit me" until last night, but I'm so used to following this squad and interacting with people who "know how things work" here...it's so sad to get caught up in the "good business" of things when, really, that cash just goes into the pocket of Our Most Benevolent Owner...the same one with free advertising all around St. James' Park and the same one that would be hard-pressed to invest any of this...I was cooking dinner with the Future Mrs. Supermac and she asked why Newcastle would sell their best player...I explained as best I could and then moved on to other conversation...about 10 minutes later, I just kinda burst out with a "You know, it really sucks that they sold Cabaye...like, what's the point? What are we ever rooting for with this team? An 8th to 10th place finish? Woo-hoo! There's no ambition whatsoever...we don't think we can compete for Champions League places and we certainly don't spend the money to do so, there's no interest whatsoever in the domestic cups, and we don't want to finish high enough to go to the Europa League...what's the point? What exactly am I rooting for? Hey! We finished Top 10, our player's didn't tire out because we flamed out early in the Cups, and we don't have to worry about the travel slog of the Europa League! What a successful season!! What is that???"
And, after a few minutes of silence...
"I just hope we one day get bought by a filthy rich oil baron."

Mac if it's any comfort people have asked me many times over the years would my feelings change towards NUFC should someone like the Abu Dhabi lot at Citeh or a Russian oligarch such as Roman Abramovich take over? The simple answer is No. Should it happen and The Toon were competing for the title or winning silverware I would, possibly like many others, not care one jot how the success was achieved, but simply bask in the reflected glory of it all. Knowing that the years of pain were over and I finally had something to be truly grateful for.
It's the apparent lack of ambition from our most benevolent owner that sucks you down into depression like there's no escape. I both sympathise and empathise with those supporters behind The Time 4 Change campaign. However, unless there's a big money investor willing to bank roll a take over I'm resigned to nothing changing anytime soon no matter how many people march through The Toon or past SJP and the pain to continue.
The only thing many Mags have left to cling to is the hope one day someone will buy The Club and give it's fans the team it deserves. My dream is that I live long enough to see it happen.

I appreciate at the time of writing this there's still some 36+ hours to go until the Transfer window closes, but I have to ask the following question, is it again going to be a case of all too little, all too late? Last Summer was bad enough what with the ramblings of Joe Feckinghere before he had even got his feet under the table, including thoughts on Yohan Kebab, who wouldn't be sold no matter what! The mighty Joe with his telephone directory of managers all just waiting for the call to discuss a multitude of transfer deals. Then after all the rhetoric the sole outcome a loan deal for Loic Remy from 'Appy Arry' at QPR. Now don't get me wrong here I'm thankful the player did arrive as I dread to think where the team would be in the league without his goals this season. Certainly not sitting with 37 points in 8th, having apparently already achieved the ambition of the Clubs hierarchy, looking as safe as houses above mid table and a long way from Relegation, even if the most incredible run of poor results ever was to happen between now and May. On reviewing that last bit I'm not even sure this is a moan about Joe or just a bald statement of how crazy it's got at Gallowgate Towers under the regime of our most benevolent owner. At least previously I kind of suspected what the job of Decka Lyingbas***d was in that being the major mouth piece for Mikey I could always refuse to listen if it suited me or laugh or have a beer and drown my sorrows. Mind you that said the guy did occasionally surprise me in a positive way with some of the things he came out with. Unfortunately I'm unable to say the same for the current Director of Feckall! Roll on six months and the Kebab has been sold, despite Joe informing us he would not be going during this window. Not that he is the only one to come out with such crap as the player himself was also being quoted as saying he would see the season out. However as communication between Club and media is at an all time low perhaps it's better just to not put faith in anything which is reported about The Toon these days. Anyway in my book it's actions which speak a whole lot more than words. Which brings me back to that question I asked above... Is it all too little, all too late? The sum total of two transfer windows potentially being the loan deals of two strikers, one of which has already stated it's extremely unlikely he will join permanently come the summer, while the other is hoping to resurrect his career after grinding to an almighty halt in Germany. The fact other alleged targets are informing everyone that will listen they're not interested in coming to Newcastle only highlights the complete balls up Feckinhere is making of his role. Not that I actually apportion all the blame to him, as without doubt the main man accountable for this crass state of affairs is our most benevolent owner himself. Of course as he trousers the ex millions of profit made on the Kebab sale to PSG, I imagine he is sitting back thinking all is good in the World and what a wonderful business this football lark is! Sadly as a supporter all I have to look forward to is the derby this weekend for bragging rights and a few other home matches which may provide some kind of entertainment value, but don't bet on it happening. Mike Ashley is slowly but surely killing my love of Professional Football and I thank God there's a bunch of 8 year old kids that keep me grounded enough to still retain some passion for the game. WL

Appears Newcastle's Director of Feckall is attempting to look for the sympathy vote among The Toon Army... this is from the Sunday Express. JOE KINNEAR has insisted Newcastle only sold Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain because he was desperate to leave. Published: Sun, February 2, 2014 The Magpies’ director of football has again become the target of fans’ fury after the club sold the Frenchman but Kinnear insisted: “Yohan made it very clear to us that the opportunity of playing Champions League football and being part of the sporting project at PSG was something he wanted.” Well Joe if that was the case and you knew a transfer was on the cards why the feck didn't you have someone else lined up in advance to replace him? Ah! s**t I'm being stupid again, being in charge of sales and having just got his boss millions in profit Joe obviously was only think about his commission from the deal. Even 'support the team not the regime' appears cliched now, absolute shambles from top to bottom. WL
