The 2015/16 Capital One Cup gets under way this week, with 36 fixtures taking place across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The first stop on the road to Wembley sees all of the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League 1 and Sky Bet League 2 teams in action, with the prospect of scalps and penalty shoot-outs adding to the potential for drama in Round 1. Capital One Cup Round 1 fixtures (kick-off times are 7.45pm unless stated): Tuesday 11th August Accrington Stanley v Hull City Blackburn Rovers v Shrewsbury Town Brentford v Oxford United Bristol Rovers v Birmingham City Cardiff City v AFC Wimbledon Carlisle United v ChesterfieldCharlton Athletic v Dagenham & Redbridge Colchester United v Reading Fleetwood Town v Hartlepool UnitedHuddersfield Town v Notts County Ipswich Town v Stevenage Luton Town v Bristol City Millwall v Barnet Milton Keynes Dons v Leyton Orient Morecambe v Sheffield United Northampton Town v Blackpool Nottingham Forest v Walsall Peterborough United v Crawley Town Plymouth Argyle v Gillingham Port Vale v Burnley Rochdale v Coventry City Rotherham United v Cambridge United Scunthorpe United v Barnsley Sheffield Wednesday v Mansfield Town Southend United v Brighton & Hove Albion Swindon Town v Exeter City Wigan Athletic v Bury Wolverhampton Wanderers v Newport County Wycombe Wanderers v Fulham Yeovil Town v Queens Park Rangers York City v Bradford CityBolton Wanderers v Burton Albion (8pm) Wednesday 12th August Crewe Alexandra v Preston North End Oldham Athletic v MiddlesbroughPortsmouth v Derby County (live on Sky Sports) Thursday 13th August Doncaster Rovers v Leeds United (live on Sky Sports) Look out for... Last season's Cup semi-finalists Sheffield United begin their Cup campaign at Morecambe. The Blades had a memorable 2014/15 run in the competition, knocking out the likes of West Ham United before running eventual finalists Tottenham Hotspur close at the last-four stage. Hull City will feature in Round 1 for the first time in three seasons following their return to the Sky Bet Championship, and they travel to League 2's Accrington Stanley, where Josh Windass could feature against his father’s former club. Queens Park Rangers and Burnley also enter the fray in Round 1, and they travel to Yeovil Town and Port Vale respectively. The live match on Sky Sports on Wednesday is Portsmouth's clash with Derby County at Fratton Park. The pair are among the most-fancied to challenge at the top of their divisions this term, and new Rams boss Paul Clement faces a tough introduction on his Capital One Cup managerial debut. On Thursday, there is the small matter of a Yorkshire Derby taking place, between Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United, in another game being screened by Sky Sports. The teams have met twice in the competition in recent seasons, with Leeds having come out victors on both occasions. Elsewhere in the opening round, Bristol Rovers mark their return to the Cup with a home fixture against 2011 winners Birmingham City, while Barnet also return to face Millwall. Other Championship/League 2 match-ups see 2012 runners-up Cardiff City go to AFC Wimbledon, Brentford host Oxford United, Charlton Athletic at home to Dagenham & Redbridge and Wolverhampton Wanderers travel across the bridge to Newport County. There are also three all-Sky Bet League 1 meetings, which include Scunthorpe United versus Barnsley, Rochdale versus Coventry City and Wigan Athletic versus Bury. Channel 5 is the new home for competition highlights, Capital One Cup Tonight, with an hour-long programme being broadcast at 11pm on Wednesday 12th August. WL

Round 1 of the Capital One Cup exploded into life on Tuesday evening, with upsets aplenty across the 32 fixtures. Seven Sky Bet Championship sides fell at the first hurdle including four-time winners Nottingham Forest, who were defeated 4 - 3 at the City Ground by Walsall after striker Tom Bradshaw netted a hat-trick. Forest had fought back from 3 - 1 down but the Welsh front man scored the Saddlers' winner from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of added time. Oxford United also put four past Championship opposition in the form of Brentford, while Shrewsbury Town, Notts County, Luton Town, Port Vale and Burton Albion all recorded scalps over second-tier sides. There was an unhappy return to Cup life for Bristol Rovers, who were knocked out after a 2 - 1 defeat to 2011 winners Birmingham City, but Barnet, who played their first game in the competition since 2012, beat Millwall 2 - 1 after extra-time. In total, 13 teams secured wins over higher-division opponents, as Carlisle United, Hartlepool United, Northampton Town, Exeter City and York City also clinched results to put them into Thursday's Round 2 draw. Here's a look at the results from the Capital One Cup First Round... Oldham Athletic will face Middlesbrough at SportsDirect.com Park (LMAO) for the second consecutive season in Round 1 of the Capital One Cup. The opening day of last year’s competition saw the pair drawn against each other, and it was a comprehensive victory for the visitors that time. Goals from Luke Williams, Grant Leadbitter and Kike secured Boro's place in Round 2, but Oldham will have an opportunity to turn the tables on their opponents on Wednesday night. Head-to-head Last season's Cup clash was the first meeting between Oldham and Middlesbrough for 19 years, and it was the former who enjoyed a healthy record against the North Yorkshire club prior to that. Before the 3 - 0 defeat, Oldham had won five out of their six matches against them in the league, drawing the other. And it is the Latics who lead the overall head-to-head standings, with 21 victories to Middlesbrough's 19, and an additional 10 draws having taken place. In League Cup meetings however, Oldham have never beaten Boro, following last year's result and a 4 - 2 second round loss back in 1970. What's changed? Oldham's current manager Darren Kelly is the third man to hold the post since the Capital One Cup Round 1 meeting a year ago. Lee Johnson was in charge for that fixture, but he departed the club in February to take charge at Barnsley. Dean Holden took the reins for the remainder of the last campaign, until Kelly arrived from his coaching role at Sunderland during the summer. Contrastingly, Middlesbrough have the same man at the helm as they did when the pair met last season, Aitor Karanka. The Spaniard led the club to the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final in May, but they lost that match 2 - 0 to Norwich City. The club therefore remain in the second tier of English football, meaning they enter the competition in Round 1 once again, but have strengthened their squad over the summer, recruiting the likes of Stewart Downing and loan signing Tomas Kalas. Solid starts Both clubs began their 2015/16 league seasons in solid fashion, each taking a point from their respective games on the opening weekend. Jonathan Forte rescued a point for Oldham as they came from behind to draw with Walsall in Sky Bet League 1, while Boro and Championship newcomers Preston North End contested a goalless stalemate at Deepdale. League Cup record Oldham's furthest venture in this competition came back in 1990, where they marched all the way to the Final at Wembley Stadium. They faced Nottingham Forest in the showpiece that day, and they were beaten by a solitary strike from Nigel Jemson, as Brian Clough's side lifted the trophy. Middlesbrough, on the other hand, are one-time winners of the League Cup. Back in 2004, they beat Bolton Wanderers at the Millennium Stadium to claim their first competition triumph, having been beaten in back-to-back finals in 1997 and 1998. Carlisle United caused the biggest shock of Round 2 in the Capital One Cup as they saw off Queens Park Rangers 2 - 1 at Loftus Road in a pulsating round of action. The Cumbrians are yet to win a league match this season but Jason Kennedy’s late goal secured their passage into Round 3, where they’ll face eight-time League Cup winners Liverpool. The ball hit the back of the net 80 times in total on Tuesday night of Round 2 and five games featured five goals in a 4 - 1 scoreline. A Joe Dodoo debut hat-trick fired Leicester City to success at Bury, while Ipswich Town needed extra-time to eventually see off Doncaster Rovers. It was also 4 - 1 at St James’ Park, where Newcastle United comfortably eased past Northampton Town, and Charlton Athletic hit four against Peterborough United. The other game to finish 4 - 1 was between Crystal Palace and Shrewsbury Town. Despite the League 1 Shrews taking the lead, Palace eventually turned it around around to advance after extra-time. Elsewhere, Aston Villa and Sunderland were made to work hard for victories against Football League opposition, with the top-flight duo eventually seeing off Notts County (5 - 3) and Exeter City (6 - 3) respectively. Two games went all the way to penalties, with Stoke City overcoming Luton Town 8 - 7 on spot kicks live on Sky Sports, and West Bromwich Albion beating Port Vale 5 - 3 from 12 yards. Final Sunday 28th February 2016 Home - Away Att. 86,206 Liverpool 1 - 1 Man City Man City win 3 - 1 on penalties. Manchester City secured their second Capital One Cup triumph in three seasons after beating Liverpool 3 - 1 on penalties in the final at Wembley. Goalkeeper Willy Caballero saved from Lucas, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana to cap a fine personal run in the competition this season, in which he played every minute. Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho scored the opening goal of the game in regular time, firing in from a wide angle under Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. But with seven minutes remaining, Coutinho slotted home after Lallana's effort rebounded off the post, forcing extra-time. Emre Can had given Liverpool a positive start to the shoot-out when he coolly dinked down the middle, but it was all Caballero and City from there, as Sergio Aguero, Jesus Navas and Yaya Toure all struck crucial blows. City, by and large, created the best chances throughout the afternoon but, in the end, needed spot kicks to ensure manager Manuel Pellegrini will leave the club with silverware in his final campaign in charge. The two sides were greeted by a feast of pyrotechnics and mosaics for the showdown that would decide the destination of the first silverware of the 2015/16 season. Aguero broke for the first real chance of the game after 23 minutes, latching on to a neat through-ball from David Silva, but his effort was matched with a save by Mignolet, who superbly tipped onto his left-hand post. The duo combined again in the 49th minute, when Aguero put through Fernandinho, who broke the deadlock after his shot found its way under the body of Mignolet. Silva was the author of chaos for large periods of the game, and City should have taken a 2-0 lead on the hour when the Spaniard, in an abundance of space, picked out Raheem Sterling, who could only side-foot wide against his old club. Aguero then marched through again and went to ground after cutting back inside on Alberto Moreno, only for referee Michael Oliver to wave away the penalty shouts. Sterling missed another chance with 10 minutes of normal time remaining, scuffing his effort wide of the penalty spot after more good work from Aguero. He was made to pay minutes later. Daniel Sturridge flashed a ball across the face of goal, Lallana hit the post but Coutinho slotted the rebound into the bottom corner to spark jubilant celebrations from the Liverpool supporters. Fernando could have won it with four minutes to go, but fired straight at Mignolet from six yards. The Belgian then saved again from three yards, blocking Toure’s shot after a goal-line scramble. Aguero had the best chance in extra-time, when he went through on goal but once again couldn’t beat Mignolet, who made a strong one-handed save to his left. Divock Origi almost scored a winner for Liverpool moments later, but had his header beaten away by pending hero Caballero, who later rose to the occasion to hand City their fourth League Cup triumph in history. Liverpool: Mignolet, Clyne, Milner, Coutinho, Firmino (Origi 80), Henderson, Sturridge, Sakho (Kolo Toure 25), Moreno (Lallana 71), Lucas, Can. Substitutes not used: Bogdan, Benteke, Allen, Flanagan. Manchester City: Caballero, Sagna (Zabaleta 90), Kompany, Fernando (Navas 90), Sterling, Aguero, Silva (Bony 110), Clichy, Fernandinho, Otamendi, Yaya Toure. Substitutes not used: Hart, Kolarov, Demichelis, Ihenacho. Referee: Michael Oliver. WL
