Ok ...so Rafa is gonna make mistakes....he is not God......he just made his first....Gayle # 9?........come on it shpuld be Nitro......both from our point of view and Nitro's progression. I have a feeling that Gayle is not gonna be prolific at all...wheres Nitro will get better and more confident.........His idol is AS.....thats why he came here...and stayed. FFS!

Dwight Gayle became Newcastle United's latest number nine with the blessing of teammate Aleksandar Mitrovic. Former Crystal Palace front man Gayle was handed the iconic squad number - which has been worn by the likes of Alan Shearer, Malcolm Macdonald and Jackie Milburn on Tyneside - on Thursday morning, just over 24 hours before the Magpies kick off their Sky Bet Championship campaign at Fulham. Manager Rafa Benitez revealed that both Gayle and Serbian striker Mitrovic had set their sights on the vacant shirt, but that there is no bad feeling between the pair, who will look to fire United back into the top flight at first time of asking. "In the end they decided," Benitez revealed. "I wanted to organise a finishing competition to see who would get the number nine. In the end, Mitro was telling him 'listen, take the number nine'. "It was not a big issue. The atmosphere is good. I have had a conversation with both. At the beginning they both wanted the number nine but after talking between them it was easy. "I'm really pleased because they understand the main thing is to be on the pitch and score goals." And as for Gayle, the boss has urged him to set his sights towards Shearer's record-breaking 206 goals for the Club. "It will maybe be impossible to do what Alan Shearer has done with the number nine but if he is a little bit close in a couple of years, that would be fantastic for us," he said. Lights Oot!

Canny I kind of agree, however Nitro is still as raw as f*ck and prone to extreme rushes of blood. He's not proven prolific in front of goal either although he should do a whole lot better in the Championship than the PL. Anyway for what it's worth I think it's quite clever of Rafa to keep him hungry for the shirt especially as he misses the first four games thanks to his last season against Spurs. Gayle will also want to make his mark early in the iconic number nine so again no slacking from the off as he has four games in which to score before Nitro gets any playing time whatsoever. Lights Oot! blackandwhitethinking

Prediction.........we wont win any games until we have a proper centre forward upfront.........put RiverEden up there until the Nitro is eligible to play .....any thing is better than a team incapable of playing possession football..........Wonder if this will stir up the sleeping renegades.....and if not we can always blame Pardew Right Capn?

While I wouldn't quite go as far as saying The Toon will not win a game until an old fashioned centre forward is signed I do believe the club missed a trick in not signing McCormack from Fulham. Lights Oot!
